You are not your illness.

You have an individual story to tell.

You have a name, a history, a personality.
Staying yourself is part of the battle.

Medication Management

I don’t believe in the industry standard “med check” model of practice. Every session will include an exploration of the optimization of your medication, brief psychotherapy, and ongoing medical assessment.

I’m accustomed to working with individuals who have tried > 20 medications with little to no relief of their symptoms. Do medicines fix all mental health symptoms? No – they don’t. And I’ll never try to convince you there’s a pill for everything. In fact, I’ll be very honest about the limitations of medications when it comes to treating your symptoms.

I practice evidence-based care and will work together with you (as appropriate and when desired) to include supplements, nutraceuticals, plant-based medicines, and scientifically-backed healthy behavior changes as part of your holistic treatment plan.

If this is an option desired by the patient and their family, we will work together to select a medication. After education about adverse effects, the patient may start a trial of the medication. In one week to one month, the patient will return to the office to evaluate the effect of the medication. Medications can have varied and unexpected effects and we will closely monitor this. A change in medication may be necessary.

After the patient is having a decrease in symptoms and is feeling better on the medication, follow up visits may be as far apart as three months.

It’s important to note that not all patients and not all psychiatric problems require medicine. However, there are many instances where prescription medicines are helpful in relieving symptoms for the patient. Medication can be an effective part of the treatment of many mental illnesses such as: Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar disorder, Panic, Sleep problems, ADHD, and Irritability/Anger.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m not sure I want to start medication?

Most times we do not need to start medications after the first session. We can watch and wait and follow symptoms closely. This wait period is a great time to start therapy, as some symptoms can be reduced with behavioral modifications.

How do you know what medication to choose?

A thorough assessment will be done during your intake appointment. This sometimes means that labs are needed to rule out or make sure there is not a medical cause for your symptoms. We use scientific evidence, your health history, and your input to help lead us to a decision.

When will I feel better?

Some medications can take up to 4 weeks to take effect, while others may take less. During your session with your provider this can be discussed more in detail and personalized to your situation.

What if I have side effects?

At your session we will discuss common side effects, most are short lived. We will discuss what to look out for and what action you need to take. You can message us with non-urgent concerns, we will respond within 72hrs. For severe side effects or urgent concerns please go to your local ER.

How long will I need medication for?

That depends. This is case by case and can be discussed with your provider. We will discuss hat the science says but will respect your wishes and your ultimately your decisions.

Is this confidential?

Yes, our sessions are confidential. All conversations between a provider and client are protected by law and cannot be shared without the client's permission, except in cases where there is a risk of harm to the individual or others OR if subpoenaed by the courts.

Why do you need to talk with my medical provider?

Collaborative care is the best care. The more information your providers know, the better informed they are to effectively care for you. Statistics show that having a mental health condition can affect your medical health, we need to make sure you are getting the best care. This may include labs or other testing such as an EKG. Some mental health medications require blood work for safety checking. Collaborating with your Primary care provider is the best way to care for your whole self.

What can I expect during my session?

We will discuss your history and current symptoms. Some of our questions may seem repetitive in a way, but it is part of the process. We will get to know each other and begin the journey to wellness, together.
